Poverty and disability tend to ‘hang out’ together: where you find disability, you often find poverty. This is especially true in the blindness sector, which has an unacceptably high unemployment rate.

Dr Rowland, Honorary President of the SANCBSANCB’s Honorary President Dr William Rowland believes that entrepreneurship is an excellent way for persons with disabilities to escape poverty and become fully integrated into society.

Last year, he judged the SA Breweries Foundation Disability Empowerment Awards, where he encountered businesses doing just that. His favourite contestants included ‘We Love Coffee’ (a chain of coffee shops run by deaf people), Downies and Brownies (a coffee shop run by people with Down Syndrome), and disability businesses engaged in recycling and urban gardening.

Please support businesses like these whenever you can, and help break the bad relationship between poverty and disability. Thank you!
