We’re calling on all our SANCB friends to join a worldwide campaign to ratify and implement the Marrakesh Treaty.
The Treaty is a game changer for blind people and authorised bodies who want to produce or import/export copyright works in accessible formats, like braille.
This will help avoid the duplication of transcription efforts; and allow those with larger libraries to share with countries with fewer resources.
The Treaty has been fully ratified by over 80 nations, including the USA. South Africa has committed to sign it; but can only do so once copyright laws have been amended. This can’t happen soon enough. Only 1-7% of published works are available globally in accessible formats. So come on SA! It’s time to promote the free movement of accessible materials and put an end to the book famine.
