The SANCB and Section 27 have put a mammoth effort into the fight to get the Department of Basic Education (DBE) to provide blind and partially sighted learners with accessible learning materials.
Even though the DBE agreed in April 2018 to provide braille text books to special schools, progress is painfully slow. There’s now a real possibility that they will miss their deadline.
We hope that all learners will have accessible learning materials by the end of 2019. If not, we may have to go the legal route again to deal with this grave challenge.
