Study at Optima College
Optima College was established in 1985 in Pretoria and it is a training facility of the South African National Council for the Blind. Class based training is offered to blind and partially sighted persons who are in need of independence and/or work related skills. It is one of the only Colleges in South Africa that caters exclusively for blind and partially sighted persons.
Optima is a full residential facility offering courses in Business and Office Practice, Computer Literacy, Contact Centre training, and Braille Literacy. Students’ lives are also enriched with Activities of Daily Living skills classes which enable visually impaired students to be fully independent.
Although the facilities and training programmes are in the first place for the benefit of South African citizens, a small percentage of students from other African countries may also be admitted annually. South African students are drawn from all provinces of South Africa and there is no discrimination in terms of gender, race, language, religion – although English is the language of instruction on all courses.
The College has committed itself to providing relevant training to all students, based on the assessment of their needs, whether a student is a school leaver or the student is returning to education or employment.
Optima College aims to be a bridge to new beginnings, a centre of excellence offering development opportunities, training and support to visually impaired persons in South and Southern Africa.
Optima College is committed to:
Creating training opportunities for blind and partially sighted persons to develop relevant independence and work related skills, which will enable them to maximise their potential and to function as independently as possible. To this end, the College uses a comprehensive assessment process to identify their training needs and applies an individualised training approach.
We are proud to say that Optima College has been recognised for its excellence in the field and is a registered NPO and FET college.
If you want to take your future into your own hands, gain new skills and even improve your chances of finding employment, please see our Prospectus and Student Application Form here.
