Christmas wouldn’t be the same without warm acts of kindness, festive cheer and hope. And that’s what our donors gave, when they responded to our December appeal to assist visually impaired children.
If you’re one of the wonderful people who contributed, thank you! Your donations will be used to provide children with white canes, assistive devices, and early childhood development (ECD).
The SANCB’s Assistive Technology Centre stocks an exciting assortment of assistive devices and educational toys; braille and tactile books, puzzles, talking globes and calculators, magnifiers and singing soft toys, and white canes.
Learning to use a white cane is the first step in being able to get around independently. Walking into obstacles all the time is dangerous and unpleasant.
But when a child starts to use a white cane, and has orientation and mobility training, their confidence soars.
They can manoeuvre around obstacles and find their own way around their home and garden. It puts the bounce into their steps!
You’ll probably know that education for blind and partially sighted children of all ages is in a state of crisis in South Africa. Thousands of children don’t have access to education, textbooks in accessible formats, or trained teachers.
But with your support, we can assist children like Tommy while we advocate for change. Thank you!
