We celebrated International White Cane Safety Day with events in Welkom on 12 October and in Rustenburg on 26 October. These were fun and rewarding experiences for all participants – with visually impaired participants walking with white canes and sighted participants wearing blindfolds.
We hope events like these will make roads safer for white cane road users. It just requires simple changes by motorists, like giving visually impaired pedestrians right of way at crossings and stopping clear of stop lines.
We thank everyone involved in bringing this event to life – and for increasing awareness about the white cane.
